AQ Messaging Targets Wagner Group
Lucas Webber of Militant Wire put together a new piece outlining how al-Qaeda has increased their messaging focus on the Russian Wagner Group. In a recent video statement, the leader of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), Ag Ghaly, declared an intensified jihad against Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, and Russia's Wagner Group. This escalation follows Wagner's expanded operational presence in northern Mali. Ghaly accused Wagner of causing mass civilian casualties and displacement, particularly in Mopti, Segou, Gao, and Timbuktu, and noted an increased jihadist volunteerism for suicide operations against state military and Wagner combatants. AQIM's broader assessment sees a regional triumph over Wagner as a blow to hasten Russia's decline. In Al-Qaeda Central's One Ummah magazine, the organization asserts that jihadism aims to destroy the current world order, contributing to the establishment of a new multipolar world order. As AQIM and Wagner clash in the Sahel, Al-Qaeda's narrative against Russia may increase, potentially leading to threats or actions targeting Russia or its interests abroad.
