Dam Blown In Ukraine
The Nova Kakhovka dam has failed on the eastern bank of the Dnipro, just north of Kherson. Ukraine has blamed Russia, calling this an act of terrorism. Russian media is mostly blaming Ukraine but there are also snippets suggesting this was simply the effects of long term damage and not the result of a deliberate act by either side.
This feels like another event where definitive proof one way, or another will not be forthcoming anytime soon.
There are arguments as to why this hurts each side. For Russia, many of their defensive positions are now flooded, along with minefields and ammo dumps forcing them to evacuate an are they’ve built up for months. Additionally, this limits the availability of fresh water to residents in Russian occupied Crimea.
Ukraine is forced to deal with thousands of their citizens displaced from the flood zone, the ecological disaster and the risk of any impact to the nearby Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.
Finally, a US official told NBC news that they have intelligence leaning towards Russia as the culprit but they’ve not yet released any information beyond that statement.
