Study Estimates 47,000 Total Russians Killed In Ukraine

A recent study by Meduza, Mediazona and Tubingen University used a variety of public information to estimate the total Russian losses so far in Ukraine. By obtaining access to a restricted database of inheritance cases, the group was able to come up with the estimate of 47,000 killed in action. This number does not include Ukrainian nationals fighting for Russia as part of the Luhansk or Donetsk People’s Republic.

As an example of the work to come to their conclusions, the group looked at inheritance cases starting in 2014 to create a baseline. Then as they moved into 2022 and 2023, they were able to identify spikes in cases for young men while the rate for young women remained historically normal.

I would be interested in, but haven’t seen, a study like this into Ukrainian casualties.

Ukrainian Offensive Updates

Progress continues, albeit slow and grinding, across the front in Ukraine. Ukrainian forces have advanced up to 5km east of Robotyne on the Orikhiv axis. On the Velyka-Novosilka axis Ukrainian forces are reported to have entered the town of Staromayske. Near Bakhmut, Ukrainian elements are advancing to the south of town with portions of Klischiivka and Adriivka potentially under their control, although that extent of that progress is disputed.

The Russian push in Lyman, which still ongoing, doesn’t appear to have materialized into a major offensive. The attack there did push Ukrainian forces back a few kilometers over the course of a couple weeks, but overall that situation is trending towards an uptick in fighting rather than a significant advance.

Ukrainian progress has been limited across the front and is likely less successful than many, including western supporters, were hoping for. While there is still time this fall for Ukraine to continue their attacks before the winter sets in, it’s hard to see what will change between now and then that will drastically shift the situation on the battlefield.
